A workshop series on Angel Investing

If you're an accredited investor looking to learn how to invest in early-stage startups while supporting local entrepreneurs, these sessions are designed for you.

Offered by TiE Oregon, this 3-part series provides a structured approach to understanding startup investing—from the fundamentals of evaluating opportunities to managing risk and supporting portfolio companies. Participants will gain insights into how to build a well-balanced investment strategy, conduct due diligence, and navigate the startup ecosystem while contributing to the growth of innovative businesses in our community.

  • TOPICS

    SESSION 1: THE STARTUP INVESTING JOURNEY. Learn the foundation for successful angel investing and the benefits of becoming a TiE Charter Member, which is a community of experienced, successful investors. Topics will include: Investor Psychology, Startup Ecosystem, Angels vs. VC, Investing Basics (including terminology, vehicles, and valuation), Exits & Liquidity and Practical Considerations.

    SESSION 2: DEAL PICKING. This session will guide participants through the key stages of early-stage investing—from building a balanced and diversified portfolio to sourcing high-potential startups. Attendees will learn how to evaluate pitches through structured due diligence, understand key investment criteria, and explore strategies for supporting founders post-investment, whether taking an active or passive role.

    SESSION 3: DUE DILIGENCE. Expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the diligence process, beginning with an overview of the diligence timeline, comparing the expectations and process for angels and VCs, to reviewing outcomes and deliverables, including sample reports and memos that illustrate best practices.

  • Who Should Attend?

    This course is ideal for accredited individuals committed to driving economic growth and interested in the dynamic world of startup investing. It’s also perfect for those seeking to build a network of like-minded investors and learn from experienced professionals with a proven track record in the startup ecosystem.

    An accredited investor is an individual who meets at least one of the following criteria as defined by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC):

    Individual Income: Earned income exceeding $200,000 (or $300,000 together with a spouse or spousal equivalent) in each of the last two years, with the expectation of the same level of income in the current year.

    Net Worth: A net worth exceeding $1 million, either individually or jointly with a spouse or spousal equivalent, excluding the value of the primary residence.
